When did you last have a formal dinner party? How many do you throw a month? or every decade, for that matter?

The traditional arrangement of houses in the western hemisphere is to organize rooms around separate activities: reading books, sleeping, cooking, eating. And much of that organization implied domestic servants to arrange those activities. In the mid-1980s I reorganized a home for a client who lived in a standard terraced house – the kind anyone reading this book would recognize – that was laid out in the 1880s with a front room, a dining room (both had been knocked together) and a separate kitchen at the back of the house.

We swapped everything around to suit the informality of modern life. No dining room, no sitting room, just a big social space with the kitchen at the front of the house near the front door.

When you plan the layout of your home, do it around the way you live, not how you fantasize you might one day live.
